How to share files over a Lan for Windows 7

In this tutorial, I will show you how to setup a file sharing server on your local Microsoft Network.

First of all, to enable sharing on a Microsoft network, all computers that will access a shared resource must be in the same Workgroup or Domain.

To Change or view the workgroup of your system just right click on “My Computer”
(My Computer – Properties – computer name – Change – workgroup)
Note down the workgroup name and make sure that both computers are at the same Workgroup

After that make a folder on the desired computer and name it as you wish
Right click on it and go to properties and then to “Sharing” Tab
note down the Network Path
and click “Share” and choose your account so it can be protected if you use password!

Now go to the other computer and right click on “My Computer”
choose “Map network Drive”
(My Computer–Map Network Drive)

And then write the network path and choose the option “Reconnect at logon”

and click finish!
Example: \\Server\Share
————- \\(yours computer name)\(Shared folder’s Name)

NOTES
-If it ask for a Username and Password
just type the account of the computer that shares the folder

-When you right click on “My computer” make sure it’s not a shortcut
or you won’t find the properties of your system

-This can be done with a desktop pc with a laptop over wireless network!

-The connection is possible if you have connected both computer with LAN cable or
they just share connection from the local Router

MCTS 70-680: Windows 7 File Sharing

This video looks at the two different ways that you can share files on the network with Windows 7. These are basic sharing and the advanced sharing. Advanced sharing gives you a lot more control over the share and allows additional options like configuring a comment for the share.

File Sharing Demo 03:53

File Sharing Permissions
The 3 basic file sharing permissions are read, read/write and full control. The read/write permissions gives you the ability to delete files. Full control adds the ability to change file permissions and also take ownership of files.
When these permissions are combined with NTFS permissions the most restrictive permission is used. For example, if you share a folder with read only permissions then the most access the user can have will be read only.

Public folder sharing
This allows you to have a folder that anyone can access even without a username and password.

Configuring Simple Sharing
To share a folder using simple folder sharing, right click the folder and select the option share with. This will allow you to share the folder via HomeGroup or with specific people. Simple sharing uses a wizard to share the folder so you won’t have too many options that you can configure.

Configuring Advanced Sharing
To access advanced sharing, right click the folder, select properties and then select the sharing tab. On the sharing tab there is a button Advanced Sharing which will allows you to configure the advanced sharing options.
The Advanced Sharing options allows you to configure multiple share names for the same folder. You can choose a different share name rather than using the same name as the folder. You can configure the number of users that can connect to the share at the same time. A comment for the share can be added so that users can get an idea what files are stored in the share.

Network and Sharing Center
In the Network and Sharing Center you can configure global sharing options. Using the Network and Sharing Center you can configure sharing to be available on different firewall profiles. For example you could disable sharing on the public profile.

To the Cloud with Windows Live & Office Web Apps

We recently celebrated the first year anniversary of Windows 7 + Windows Live with over 30 of Toronto’s favourite bloggers at the Canadian Air and Space Museum. Set up under the wings of historic aircrafts like the WWII Lancaster, the Eaton family plane and the famed Beaver, attendees took an engaging journey through the features of Windows 7, Windows Live and Windows Phone 7. And what better way to wrap up a day of working in the cloud than to take a trip up in the clouds? The truly brave among our esteemed group of attendees were given a rare opportunity: a helicopter tour from Downsview Park to Toronto Island, where they got a truly unique view of the city.
