Verizon scores a decisive win in wireless shootout

Sorry T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint. Verizon has beaten you handily in an extensive series of tests of wireless network performance.RootMetrics, an independent testing company based in Seattle, performed thousands of tests in 125 metropolitan areas across the U.S., measuring speed, quality and reliability of voice calls, texting and data downloads. When the tests – all conducted in the last half of 2016 — were tallied, Verizon came out on top or tied for first 658 times. The closest to Verizon was AT&T with 372 wins and ties, followed by T-Mobile with 270 and Sprint with 246. Although Sprint fared poorly in many tests, the number-4 carrier earned high marks when it came to call reliability, a key measure of quality for consumers. Indeed, RootMetrics said Sprint was “outstanding” when it came to call reliability and earned an “excellent” rating for that metric in all 125 metro areas it tested. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

In Verizon’s wake, T-Mobile adds hotspot data, HD video streaming to unlimited data plans

T-Mobile under CEO John Legere doesn’t like to cede the spotlight to a rival carrier. True to form, T-Mobile struck back at Verizon’s new unlimited plan late Monday as the “un-carrier” announced new features to bring its unlimited plan in line with Verizon’s. The new features to T-Mobile’s unlimited plan, dubbed T-Mobile One, include a monthly allowance of 10GB for mobile hotspot over LTE. After hitting the 10GB limit, T-Mobile drops mobile hotspot users down to 3G speeds. T-Mobile also added HD video streaming quality. Previously, video streams on T-Mobile One were limited to 480p resolution—standard definition. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Thumbs up for T-Mobile; thumbs down for Verizon and AT&T

I don’t always pay a lot of attention to surveys, but T-Mobile has gotten a thumbs up from the respected Nielsen organization, so this seems noteworthy. The self-styled uncarrier scored notably higher than the other major players in overall satisfaction, service satisfaction and likelihood to recommend. (Nielsen would not allow other sites to link to its report.)As usual, woebegone Sprint was at the bottom of the pile in all three categories. It’s notable that Verizon and T-Mobile were in a virtual tie in April of last year, but since then Verizon has moved steadily downwards while T-Mobile has made gains. That trend was mirrored in a separate survey by BrandIndex, a consultancy that measures the value of brands via numerous consumer interviews. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

FCC chief accuses AT&T and Verizon of violating net neutrality—but it probably doesn’t matter

AT&T and Verizon are probably violating the Federal Communication Commission’s net neutrality rules by allowing third-parties to pay for subscribers’ data usage. That’s the determination FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler provided in a letter to several U.S. Senators on Wednesday, along with a report on the matter from The FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau. But Wheeler is set to step down as FCC Chair once President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office next Thursday. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Verizon jacks phone upgrade fees from $20 up to $30

If there’s one thing Verizon loves to do, it’s bouncing around the cost of its smartphone upgrade fee. After Verizon introducing a $20 upgrade fee in April 2016, it’s now raising the cost even further. Whenever you swap out your existing phone—whether through a straight-up purchase or a monthly payment plan with the carrier—Verizon adds $30 to your bill. Verizon will refund the charge to anyone who returns their new device within 14 days after purchasing it. When asked about the reason for the price increase Verizon didn’t have much to say beyond a boilerplate statement. “These fees help cover increased cost to provide customers with America’s largest and fastest 4G LTE network,” Verizon told Ars Technica. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Verizon customers won’t like these two new tweaks

Verizon Wireless, already the priciest of the major U.S. wireless carriers, just got a bit more expensive. Customers who upgrade to a new device must now pay $30 for the privilege instead of $20.The $10 increase isn’t a lot of money, but I’ve never seen a valid reason for such upgrade charges to exist. Verizon claims it upped the charge because “ongoing costs to provide our customers with America’s best 4G LTE network” have increased, according to a company spokeswoman. But you can color me skeptical. Why would someone buying a new phone make it more expensive to maintain a cellular network?New upgrade fees pad Verizon’s bottom line Verizon’s capital expenditures are actually down significantly, according to the company’s latest earnings report. (Tip of the hat to ArsTechnica.com for that tidbit.) More specifically, in the first nine months of 2016, Verizon Wireless capital expenses were $7.78 billion, down from $8.47 billion during the first nine months of 2015, a drop of more than
