Here's how much people earn 10 years after attending the 25 best colleges in America

Business Insider recently released its annual ranking of the 50 best colleges in America, emphasizing metrics like graduation rate, student-life experience, and post-graduation salary. 

Our top 25 schools feature a lot of familiar institutions — Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, and MIT all make the cut. But of the best schools in the country, whose graduates earn the most money after getting established in their careers?

To find out, Business Insider reranked its top 25 colleges by median graduate salary 10 years after enrolling, using data from the Department of Education’s College Scorecard.

MIT, the sixth best college in America, grabbed the top spot — its graduates command a median salary of $91,600 a decade after enrolling.

25. Bowdoin College

Location: Brunswick, Maine

Median salary 10 years after enrolling: $54,800

Ranked 21st best college in America.

Ranked 12th best college in America. 

Known for a stellar undergraduate business school, the University of Michigan counts business, psychology, and economics as its most popular majors. UM also reports that about half of all students who received a bachelor’s degree go on to pursue a master’s within four years of graduation. The school’s notable alumni include New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Google cofounder Larry Page.

23. University of Virginia

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia

Median salary 10 years after enrolling: $58,600

Ranked ninth best college in America. 

The highest-ranked public school on our list, the University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. UVA first-year students can choose from four undergraduate schools: arts and sciences, architecture, engineering, or nursing. UVA also has a “work hard, play hard mentality. The university boasts more than 600 student clubs and 25 varsity sports.

Facebook's React JavaScript library faces a new challenger

A new rival has emerged to take on Facebook’s React JavaScript library for building UIs: Inferno, designed to be a lightweight and “blazing fast React-like Javascript library” for building modern interfaces.

“Inferno is considerably faster than React,” says the project’s web page. “This doesn’t apply to only benchmarks, but real-world applications that companies have converted to Inferno from React.” The library also is only 9KB, which means it parses faster, particularly on mobile devices.

Comedian Louis C.K once said that “Everything is amazing, and nobody is happy.”

Maybe that’s because people lack perspective when it comes to the products they use every day.

Perhaps people would be happier with their electronics and home appliances if they knew how much innovation actually went into each item.

In that spirit, here are the humbler beginnings of some of today’s everyday products.

The earliest variation of a pedaled, two-wheeled bicycle was the penny farthing, developed in the late 19th century. It is hilariously ill-proportioned, but technically rideable.

In 1983, Apple cooked up a (nameless) prototype phone and tablet that would eventually inspire the iPhone. Of course, back in 1983 mobile phones were still in their infancy. Apple had yet to ditch the dreaded cord.

Similar to modern-day models, turn-of-the-century toasters relied on heated electric coils to produce a nice crust. This model from 1915 even features a partial casing, though it’s still not enough if you ask us.

AT&T will begin new tests of its 5G networks (T)

Wireless telecommunications giant AT&T will begin new tests of its 5G networks focused on video streaming, according to Engadget. AT&T’s tests will utilize fixed devices streaming video from AT&T-owned DirecTV.

While this particular test is focused on media and communication, it will also serve as a potential demonstration of 5G’s possible IoT applications, allowing for expanded use of cameras and video in a variety of IoT settings.

5G networks offer higher upload and download speeds than current cellular networks. The bandwidth offered actually rivals that of Wi-Fi and some wired internet connections in a major development from the current 4G LTE cellular standard. AT&T has already conducted basic tests of its 5G network technology in partnership with other companies, but those tests were aimed mainly at verifying connections, whereas this newest trial will look to push the network standard closer to its maximum theoretical one Gigabit per second speed.

The higher speeds offered by 5G networks will make them particularly useful in IoT applications. IoT solutions utilize a wide variety of networks, with solution providers choosing a communication technology that matches up to the needs of the solution. Cellular connections are used for certain applications, but are not typically used in data-intensive solutions, as those types of connections can be inconsistent or not deliver sufficient bandwidth to meet needs. With the introduction of 5G, however, solution providers will have a high-speed alternative that can offer greater mobility and portability than Wi-Fi connections with comparable speeds. 5G should allow the proliferation of video-based analytics as well as greater remote monitoring capabilities, fostering the continued growth of the IoT.

Smart cities are cities that leverage IoT devices like sensors, smart lights, and smart meters to gather data that can be analyzed to gain new insights regarding their infrastructure, population, and public services.

Few cities around the world have actually grown into truly “smart” cities — most are still in the early phases of implementing some of these IoT devices, and have yet to data processing and analysis tools that can turn vast troves of data from millions of devices into a real-time view of a city’s activity and operations.  

The smart cities segment has enormous potential as a market for IoT solutions, but it is also an inherently slow-moving market. Smart cities development faces many barriers around the world including tight municipal budgets, sluggish technology procurement guidelines for public agencies, privacy and cybersecurity concerns, and a pressing need for more IT staff at municipal agencies. Taking the time to deploy new, futuristic technologies can also be a luxury that many municipal agencies charged with the day-to-day running of a metropolis can’t afford. 

However, many cities are starting to address these challenges, and smart city development around the world is accelerating.

You might be better at remembering things when you least expect it

It has been known for a while that experiencing emotion can influence how well we remember things.

Researchers from New York University have built on this knowledge and found evidence that reacting to something emotionally — like watching a sad scene in a film — may also improve how well you remember something you’ve seen, and this memory boost could continue as much as 30 minutes after experiencing the emotion.

This goes against the popular theory that being emotional can actually make memories fuzzy.

A group of 115 volunteers took part in the study, which was published last month in the journal Nature Neuroscience. They were split into groups and either shown images that would trigger an emotional reaction, and then neutral ones after 10 to 30 minutes, or the other way around. Six hours later the subjects had a surprise memory test, where the researchers asked them questions about the neutral images to see how well they remembered them.

The researchers measured participants’ physiological reactions using skin conductance. In healthy people, the skin momentarily conducts electricity better when we experience something physiologically arousing, so the researchers monitored this to see whether or not the subjects really were experiencing a necessary level of emotion. At the same time, the researchers used an fMRI scanner to monitor what the volunteers’ brains were up to.

The researchers wanted to find out two things: first, whether people could better remember the neutral images if they were shown them before or after being triggered emotionally by the emotional images, and second, whether brain regions that support emotional memory were more active and showed more connectivity in either case.

As it turns out, those that were shown the emotional stimuli before being shown the neutral images tended to better remember the neutral images.

According to the new research, when we get emotional, the amygdala in our brain is stimulated and our bodies often secrete adrenaline. Somehow, these two processes work on the hippocampus, which is the centre of memory function, and our memories for that time period are sharpened.

Dr Lila Davachi, senior author of the study and an associate professor in NYU’s Department of Psychology and Center for Neural Science, said in a statement that this is because creating memories does not just rely on the world we experience externally. 

“[It’s] also strongly influenced by our internal states,” she said. “These internal states can persist and colour future experiences.”

She added that this kind of “emotional hangover” influences how we take on board information for quite a long time afterwards.

“Emotion is a state of mind,” Davachi said. “These findings make clear that our cognition is highly influenced by preceding experiences and, specifically, that emotional brain states can persist for long periods of time.”

MRI images pointed towards this explanation. Brain regions such as the amygdala and anterior hippocampus are associated with both memory and emotions, and they lit up more after the emotional response, and were still engaged up to 30 minutes afterwards. 

This led the team to believe that the influence of emotion on memory in these areas of the brain can persist over many minutes, which was shown by the results, but the long-term impacts remain a mystery.

BMW hopes Google's augmented reality Tango technology will help it to sell cars (GOOG)

German car giant BMW is planning to use augmented reality technology developed by Google to help it sell cars.

The company announced on Thursday that it has released an Android app that utlitises Google’s new Tango technology, thereby enabling people to use their smartphones to view lifelike 3D models of certain BMW cars (the BMW i3 and the BMW i8) against a backdrop of the real world.

The app — developed by technology consultancy firm Accenture — allows people to walk around a virtual car that isn’t really there and even step inside and explore the interior. It was uploaded to the Google Play Store on Thursday but it will only work on Tango-enabled devices, which are only just appearing on the market but include the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro and the Asus Zenfone AR.

Using augmented reality in this way should allow BMW’s potential customers to familiarise themselves with its cars and explore various customisation options from the comfort of their living room. It should also provide car dealers with another tool to help them push their stock. BMW claims it is the first car company to use augmented reality in this way.

BMW Tango   1Andrea Castronovo, BMW Group’s VP of sales strategy and future retail, said in a statement: “Our vehicles are emotional products and to get that emotional feeling, you really need to experience them. In situations where the desired product isn’t available on the spot, this visualisation is the next best thing.”

Tango uses a combination of smartphone cameras, sensors and infrared to perceive the depth of an object.

Eric Johnsen, head of business development for augmented reality at Google, said in a statement: “The thing that sets Tango apart is the fact that it understands the context of the space that it’s in. So the wheels are really on the floor, for example, giving the whole experience a much more realistic feel.”

The BMW partnership with Google and Accenture highlights the increasing trend of car makers working with tech giants. On Wednesday, Ford announced plans to embed Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa into its vehicles.
