Does the world need a Windows smartwatch?

On Monday, Microsoft announced that a Windows-based smartwatch is on the horizon. My initial reaction was: Seriously? After all, efforts to squeeze Windows into a small device in the past have failed. True, some products, such as Nokia smartphones based on the Windows Mobile OS, have received good reviews. But no one bought them. Windows Phones had a 0.3 percent market share in Q4 2016, according to Gartner.Microsoft even made a smartwatch more than a decade ago. In 2004, MSN Watch, which enabled you to check email, weather and news, was a pet project of Bill Gates. Today, it’s among several products on a list of Microsoft products “that failed or were abandoned.”To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

ZTE’s Quartz smartwatch: A good idea hindered by its OS

ZTE’s Quartz smartwatch is the Chinese phone maker’s first attempt at breaching what’s quickly becoming a saturated U.S. smartwatch market. Two of the watch’s most promising features are its ability to be used without a phone and its affordability. But how do these promises stand up to the test? I tried it out for myself. 3G Connectivity may not be as useful as you think  To begin with, I must point out that a lot of the issues I had while using the ZTE Quartz were not necessarily issues arising from the watch itself, but rather from its OS, Android Wear 2.0, and limitations on the T-Mobile network. Quartz comes with 3G support from T-Mobile, as well as WiFi, and a built-in speaker, which means that you should be able to make and take calls without your phone. During testing, calls from the watch worked fine, and I was actually pleasantly surprised by the volume of the speaker, but there’s a big caveat: You have to have two different numbers for your phone and for your watch. To r

Guess goes all in on Android Wear 2.0 as it reboots its smartwatch strategy

While we haven’t seen too much in the way of must-have Android Wear 2.0 wearables from traditional tech companies like LG or Google, fashion watch makers are fully embracing Google’s new mobile OS. In the past week, Tag Heuer and Montblanc have both announced Android Wear 2.0-powered smartwatches, and now Guess is looking to get some skin in the game too. The company announced at Baselworld that it will be releasing a range of smartwatches powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 2100 chip, both under its own Guess moniker and the higher-end Gc brand. The new watches represent something of a reboot for the original Connect, which was released in late 2015 as a hybrid powered by Martian. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here
