Recording Your Screen with Quicktime
———————————————————————

The Quicktime player for Mac OS X Lion contains a new feature that allows you to record the activity on your computer screen. 1. Open the Quicktime player on your computer. 2. Go to File — New Screen Recording. You also have the option to select New Movie Recording, which uses your webcam to record a video, or New Audio Recording, which uses your microphone to record just audio. 3. A small gray box labeled Screen Recording will open up. 4. Before you start recording, adjust the recording options by clicking on the down arrow of the Screen Recording box. The options let you select which microphone to use, the kind of recording quality, whether to show mouse clicks in the recording and where to save the file. 5. Press the red Record button in the Screen Recording box. When you do this, gray text will appear on your desktop that reads: Click to record the full screen. Drag to record part of the screen. Click or drag to begin your recording. 6. The Quicktime box will automatically create a timer of the recording as well as the size of the file. Quicktime will record all the actions performed on the screen. 7. Click the Stop square in the Quicktime box to stop the recording. A new Quicktime window of the the video will open up for you to view. The Quicktime recording will not display the gray Screen Recording box. It will show a black circle where you made clicks with the mouse while recording. 8.  You can edit the video or export the file.

(3of3) Triumph of the Nerds: Great Artists Steal. 1996 Documentary

Triumph of the Nerds: Great Artists Steal. (Documentary) (Stereo) (1996)

Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires (1996) is a documentary film written and hosted by Robert X. Cringely and produced for British television by Oregon Public Broadcasting. The title refers to the 1984 film, Revenge of the Nerds, and the documentary itself is based on Cringely’s book Accidental Empires. The three-part film first premiered on PBS in June 1996.

The documentary chronicles the rise of the personal computer/home computer beginning in the 1970s with the Altair 8800, Apple I and Apple II and VisiCalc. It continues through the IBM PC and Apple Macintosh revolution through the 1980s and the mid 1990s, ending at the beginning of the Dot-com boom with the release of Windows 95.
It includes interviews with many influential figures in the PC industry, including Apple’s Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, and Oracle’s Larry Ellison.

Episode 3of3:
Steve Jobs, having viewed a demonstration of Xerox’s Alto graphical user interface, developed a desktop manager for the Macintosh with an icon-based interface modeled on the Alto. Cringely suggested that Xerox had the potential to be one of the key companies in the up and coming PC industry, had they understood the game-changing value of the graphical user interface.
Apple agreed to license parts of the Mac OS GUI to Microsoft who went on to develop Windows. Upon the release of Windows 2.0, Apple sued Microsoft in 1988 over the “look and feel” of the Mac OS. Apple lost the lawsuit in 1994, leaving Microsoft dominant in the operating system business.
Steve Jobs had recruited Pepsi-Cola executive John Sculley to become CEO of Apple, saying to the latter “do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life or do you want to come with me and change the world?”
The Apple Macintosh pioneered many of the features now standard in the PC, particularly ease of use. However, the Macintosh was considerably more expensive, so it was rapidly overtaken by the IBM PC, with some pundits not only saying that IBM had won, but also that Apple could potentially go out of business.
Chris Espinosa described Sculley’s ouster of Jobs saying “The grandiose plans of what Macintosh were going to be was just so far out of whack with the truth of what the product was doing and the truth of what the product was doing was not horrible it was salvageable but the gap between the two was just so unthinkable that somebody had to do something and that somebody was John Sculley”.

Setting up File Sharing Between Windows, Linux, and Macs with Samba!

Check out my new Linux channel: http://bit.ly/linux-nixie This tutorial will show you how to use Samba to share a directory on your Linux machine across your network, accessible by Windows, Linux, and Mac machines.
The process takes less than five minutes, and by the end you should immediately see the file server through browsing your Windows network. (This and more at http://www.linuxhaxor.net)

This is not the most secure way to share files via Linux (but you can configure Samba for greater security), and is suitable for a home network without unwanted guests.
