IDG Contributor Network: Is the iPad mini doomed?

Apple’s line of iPad products has become somewhat confusing in recent years. The company has had the iPad mini, the iPad Air, the iPad Pro, the iPad, etc. Customers have had a lot of iPad options, perhaps too many options. Now it looks like Apple might simplify its iPad offerings by killing the iPad mini.Jonathan Geller reports for BGR: …we have heard from a source close to Apple that the iPad mini is being phased out.Not one to ever be shy about disrupting the company’s own lineup, our source beats the Apple drum and states that there’s “fierce cannibalism of our own products” and that the iPad mini has just been “sized out of its own category.”To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

IDG Contributor Network: Is the new, cheaper iPad worth buying?

iPad sales have been sluggish in recent years, and Apple has become painfully aware of how its tablet sales pale in comparison to iPhone sales. Now the company has released a new, cheaper iPad that starts at $329 for 32GB and goes up to $429 for 128GB.But is the new iPad worth the money?Well let’s start with the tech specs of the new, cheaper iPad. MacRumors has a list of what you can expect from the new iPad in terms of hardware: The new 9.7-inch iPad is similar in many ways to the iPad Air 2, which had an A8X chip and started at $399, but slightly thicker and heavier with a faster A9 chip and a brighter Retina display. Another difference is that the new 9.7-inch iPad does not have a fully laminated display or anti-reflective coating per its tech specs. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Why Apple dropped iPad’s price to lowest yet

Apple this week is releasing its most affordable iPad to date. The refreshed 9.7-inch iPad, which packs a Retina screen and Apple’s A9 chip in a device that effectively replaces the iPad Air 2, is priced at $329 with 32GB of storage. The $70 price drop makes the entry-level iPad more competitive, particularly among schools that can now snag the tablet for under $300 at educational pricing. Businesses that are motivated by price and don’t require more advanced features in the iPad Pro will also be giving the iPad another look as a result of these changes, according to Avi Greengart, research director at GlobalData. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

LiquidText update a must-have for iPad Pro

In December 2015, I reviewed LiquidText, an iPad productivity app for reading PDF documents. At the time, I wrote that “LiquidText is a simple, useful app for highlighting text…but it doesn’t let you draw annotations using Apple Pencil.”As of March 14, that’s no longer the case. The latest version of the iPad-only LiquidText app enables freehand inking with Apple Pencil and an iPad Pro. And with this significant update, LiquidText may just be the app for reviewing and annotating PDFs using Apple’s tablet and stylus. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Watch Apple’s new commercials for the iPad Pro featuring real people’s tweets

For its new advertising campaign, Apple is answering Twitter questions about the iPad Pro. On Friday, Apple released a new series of iPad Pro commercials that use real tweets to showcase the iPad Pro’s LTE capabilities, as well as tout the device’s virus-free experience. “It’s better than a computer,” reads one of the ads.  Each of the 15-second ads uses a real tweet to address a feature of the iPad Pro. One tweet expresses fear over a “nasty” PC virus, while another questions whether Microsoft Word can be used on an iPad Pro. But while the tweets and corresponding Twitter usernames appear to be real, Apple has replaced the real people behind the tweets with actors. According to The Verge, Apple reached out to the real Twitter users before their tweets were used in the campaign. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

5 things the iPad Pro needs instead of skinnier bezels

While the iPad has certainly matured since its humble beginnings, it still has many of the same shortcomings it did at its debut in 2010. Even with productivity-minded accessories like the Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil, the iPad is still a far cry from the super computer Apple’s new tagline would have you believe it is. And you only need to look at the latest sales figures to see that people aren’t into it as much as they once were. Of course, Apple isn’t resting on its laurels. According to oft-accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, on the docket for this year is a 10.5-inch model with super-skinny bezels, pushing the 9.7-inch model to low-cost status and presumably killing off the iPad mini altogether. A move to a larger lineup would further solidify Apple’s move to make the iPad more Mac than iPhone, but a third Pro model, however pretty it may be, won’t be enough on its own to elevate the iPad to true professional status. If Apple wants to make the iPad the device that will on
