Google adds Street View images to directions so you can see exactly where to turn

Street View is finally ready for its closeup. Earlier this week, Google announced a new certification program for 360-degree cameras, letting anyone shoot and upload their interactive experiences right to Maps. And now, Google is looking to use those images and videos to help get you from point A to point B.The next time you go to start a new drive, you’ll notice something a little different about your route. A new tweak to the Google Maps interface puts a greater emphasis on Street View, showing small pictures of each turn alongside the description, where available. When you tap one of the thumbnails, you’ll get a full view of the scene, with a route marker indicating where to turn or what to do.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Google’s Chromebooks are getting a night mode to help you sleep better

Chrome OS fans on Reddit have uncovered an upcoming “night mode” that changes the color tint of your Chromebook’s display when toggled. The feature is currently called “Night Light” and is only available in Canary, an early build of Chrome OS.The feature is relatively simple right now, based on user reports. You click on the right corner of the Chrome OS shelf, and when the settings panel comes up you click a Night Light icon close to the power button.Adding a night mode feature to PC operating systems is something of a trend these days. Prior to this users had to rely on popular third-party options such as f.lux.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Who’s smartest — Alexa, Siri, Cortana, or Google Assistant?

When it comes to knowing stuff, Google Assistant on Google Home rules the virtual assistant world, according to results of a study conducted by Stone Temple Consulting earlier this year and released today.Microsoft’s Cortana was the second smartest, and Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa brought up the rear.Though Google ruled, “Cortana is pressing quite hard to close the gap, and has made great strides in the last three years” in terms of smartness, Stone Temple says. Unlike Google, “Alexa and Siri both face the limitation of not being able to leverage a full crawl of the web to supplement their knowledge bases. It will be interesting to see how they both address that challenge.”To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Google cooks up a tasty update to Home with step-by-step recipe instructions

Google Assistant is already a great help in the kitchen when we need to convert something from pints to cups or remember to buy eggs on our next shopping trip. But with a new update to Google Home, it’s graduating to full-on sous chef.In a feature rolling out to users just in time for Mother’s Day, Google Home will now provide step-by-step instructions to more than 5 million recipes from Bon Appétit, the New York Times, Food Network, and more. And you can even listen to music while doing it.The new system isn’t quite as simple as saying, “OK, Google, tell me how to cook coq au vin,” but it’s pretty close. To find a recipe, you’ll need to use Google Assistant or Google search to find what you want to cook. Once you find something that looks good, you can select the new “Send to Google Home” button, and it will be saved to your recipe box.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here
