Why Apple dropped iPad’s price to lowest yet

Apple this week is releasing its most affordable iPad to date. The refreshed 9.7-inch iPad, which packs a Retina screen and Apple’s A9 chip in a device that effectively replaces the iPad Air 2, is priced at $329 with 32GB of storage. The $70 price drop makes the entry-level iPad more competitive, particularly among schools that can now snag the tablet for under $300 at educational pricing. Businesses that are motivated by price and don’t require more advanced features in the iPad Pro will also be giving the iPad another look as a result of these changes, according to Avi Greengart, research director at GlobalData. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

New Apple Watch buyers face limited band selection

When I decided to buy an Apple Watch Series 2, I knew exactly which model I wanted: rose gold with the pink and midnight woven nylon band. It was a combination Apple highlighted on its website, but I wasn’t sure how many the store would keep in stock. Luckily, I snagged one of the few remaining at the SoHo Apple Store and wear it almost every day. Unfortunately, Apple has decided to stop making its watches so customizable in the box. The rose gold Apple Watch Series 2 with pink and midnight woven nylon band is no longer a combination you can buy on Apple.com. In fact, you can’t choose a nylon band alongside your aluminum or stainless steel watch at all anymore. Your choices are a Sport band, a Milanese loop, or an ultra-expensive Hermès leather band.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

IDG Contributor Network: Apple: Transgender bathrooms instead of new Macs?

One of the things I liked best about Steve Jobs was that he more or less kept Apple out of partisan politics. Oh sure, everybody knew that Jobs himself was a liberal in terms of politics, but he never used Apple as a platform to push a partisan political agenda. Steve Jobs knew quite well that people with all different kinds of politics were Apple customers, so he steered the company away from getting directly involved in politics. This had the beneficial effect of preventing people from resenting Apple on the basis of partisan politics. Tim Cook, on the other hand, seems completely unable to follow in Jobs’ footsteps when it comes to using Apple as a political platform. Cook has gone full SJW [social justice warrior] and seems unable to keep his politics to himself while acting in the role of Apple’s CEO.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Watch Apple’s new commercials for the iPad Pro featuring real people’s tweets

For its new advertising campaign, Apple is answering Twitter questions about the iPad Pro. On Friday, Apple released a new series of iPad Pro commercials that use real tweets to showcase the iPad Pro’s LTE capabilities, as well as tout the device’s virus-free experience. “It’s better than a computer,” reads one of the ads.  Each of the 15-second ads uses a real tweet to address a feature of the iPad Pro. One tweet expresses fear over a “nasty” PC virus, while another questions whether Microsoft Word can be used on an iPad Pro. But while the tweets and corresponding Twitter usernames appear to be real, Apple has replaced the real people behind the tweets with actors. According to The Verge, Apple reached out to the real Twitter users before their tweets were used in the campaign. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

IDG Contributor Network: Apple: Is Tim Cook turning into Steve Ballmer?

Apple’s stock is flying high right now, and there’s quite a bit of buzz surrounding the upcoming iPhone 8. Many in the media are predicting monster sales of the redesigned iPhone when it hits in the fall. But is all of this positive chatter about Apple ignoring the possibility that the company is sliding into the same abyss that Microsoft did when Bill Gates left and Steve Ballmer became CEO?A writer at Forbes considered the possibility that Tim Cook is leading Apple into a similar situation as the one that Microsoft faced after Ballmer became CEO.Adam Hurting reports for Forbes: But today’s Apple, and the Apple emerging for the future, is absolutely not the Apple which brought investors to this dance. That Apple was all about innovation. That Apple identified big trends – specifically mobile – then created products that turned the trend into enormous markets. That Apple new that to create those new markets required an intense devotion to product development, bringing new capabilit

Why is Apple hyping augmented reality?

Augmented reality has a powerful ally, and apparently ardent supporter, in Apple CEO Tim Cook. The leader of the most valuable publicly traded company in the world reiterated his optimistic outlook for the future of augmented reality (AR) and highlighted the technology’s capability to layer improvements in the physical world.“I’m excited about augmented reality because unlike virtual reality, which closes the world out, AR allows individuals to be present in the world but allows an improvement on what’s happening presently,” he told The Independent in a recent interview. “Most people don’t want to lock themselves out from the world for a long period of time and today you can’t do that because you get sick from it. With AR you can, not be engrossed in something, but have it be a part of your world, of your conversation. That has resonance.”To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here
