Google adds Street View images to directions so you can see exactly where to turn

Street View is finally ready for its closeup. Earlier this week, Google announced a new certification program for 360-degree cameras, letting anyone shoot and upload their interactive experiences right to Maps. And now, Google is looking to use those images and videos to help get you from point A to point B.The next time you go to start a new drive, you’ll notice something a little different about your route. A new tweak to the Google Maps interface puts a greater emphasis on Street View, showing small pictures of each turn alongside the description, where available. When you tap one of the thumbnails, you’ll get a full view of the scene, with a route marker indicating where to turn or what to do.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Rumor suggests the Note8 will be a bigger S8+ that adds a missing feature

The Galaxy S8 has barely begun shipping, but we’re already thinking about the Note8. Even with a 6.2-inch screen on the S8+, Samsung has already confirmed that a new phablet is on the way later this year, and from what we’ve heard, it looks like it will be even better.Reliable flagship phone analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI has weighed in on the Note8, saying that the device will likely pack a 6.4-inch screen and the same Snapdragon 835 chip as the S8. As 9to5Google reports, the premier feature of the phablet will be the biggest omission from the S8: a dual camera system. In what the analyst calls “the most important upgrade” in the Note8, the new setup will combine a 12MP wide-angle lens with a 13MP telephoto one, along with 3x optical zoom and dual optical image stabilization. Of note, Kuo adds that the Note8’s camera system “will be much better than that of iPhone 7 Plus, and likely match that of (the presumed) OLED iPhone.”To read this article in full or to leave a commen

GelTouch adds a new dimension to touch-sensitive controls

The problem with a lot of touch-sensitive controls is that the communication is one-way: They can feel you, but you can’t feel them. With touch-screen displays it’s easy enough, as the button does what it says on the screen. Not all buttons are designed to be looked at as they are pushed, though. Take video-game controllers or car entertainment systems, for example, or some industrial controls. The user’s attention is typically elsewhere when these are operated. Manufacturers can mold raised blobs into the surface to show where to press, perhaps even using the shape of the blob to identify the button’s function, but that means that, unlike a touch-screen, the number and function of the buttons is fixed from the moment the device leaves the factory. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here
